ONE DAY WITH BUEHLER-TURBOCRAFT

Like many other events and shows, this year the 2020 Monaco Yacht Show has been cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. For those of you who is not familiar with this event - it’s Europe’s biggest in-water display of impressive and international superyachts that are available for purchase or charter. There are also a display of companies related to yachting and luxury markets and you can find everything you need for a yacht! It’s held in Port Hercule in the Principality of Monaco and it had been attracting a super wealthy international clientele since 1991. It’s one of my favorite events to attend so I was extremely sad to hear that it was cancelled. I had high hopes about the smaller yacht event called the Cannes Yachting Festival as it didn’t get postponed til September 2021…until the very last minute…

A couple weeks earlier before the expected Cannes Yachting Festival, I was in touch with a company that I found really exciting to hear more about - Buehler-Turbocraft! We were originally supposed to meet at the yachting festival but instead we organized an experience where the CEO John Clapot, took us out between the beautiful Beausoleil and Villefranche-Sur-Mer.

In 1954, John Buehler launched Buehler-Turbocraft which was the first ever brand to successfully introduce the water jet method of propulsion. The brand offers great technology and classy design and has a history of glamorous clientele - we are talking about Jackie Kennedy, the Soviet Union’s Nikita Khrushchev, The CIA and appearance in the 1965 James Bond movie Thunderball. After a break of around 50 years it’s been relaunched again in 2018.

Today there are two different Buehler - Turbocraft models to choose from - Thunderclap and Silverfin. We got to test the new Silverfin which is the latest model faithful to the brands heritage of style, security and innovation.

Silverfin is a 12m ”pocket explorer yacht”. It’s not a super fast boat, she has a maximum speed of 22 knots. The hull is very thin and has the advantage of a smoother navigation than a regular planning boat. If it’s compared to a displacement and semi-displacement boat, it can reach a higher cruising speed. Silverfin was aimed to be a motor boat with a faster hull than a displacement cruise and more stable than a planning one.

Silverfin is also a great option to use as a luxury tender for larger yachts. It is possible to transform the platform after the needs of the owner and what it is used for. There is a large open cockpit, wheelhouse in the middle and lots of space below deck.

One of the advantages with Silverfin is the fuel-efficiency performances. On a cruising speed of 14 knots you only consume 37 liters per hour. She has a genuine ecological footprint that has no match in the market.
